The inspiration for this thread official goes out to the university paper here at Whitewater. I was readin' it during my English class one day and came across an article about file sharing. I know a lot of people that live on campus do a lot of file sharing, and since it is 'illegal', the campus is doing a campaign against it (yeah, like that's going to matter). The article mentioned the negatives of file sharing, including the fact that it slows down the campus network. According to the article, when you download files with programs like Kazaa, your using your computer as a server for others to download files from you as well. This is against the computer usage rules on campus, but is also very untrue. Anyone that knows anything about Kazaa has probably already discovered that there is a feature that will allow you to share no folders so that nobody can download from you. WinMX has a similar feature as well. I guess this type of propaganda works for those who haven't discovered this feature, but it's still flat-out false. So what is your take on file sharing? I'm all for it, to a certain extent. It should be used to download files that are not outside of other legal limits (for instance, child pornography or 1-800-COLLECT commercials starring Carrot Top, but why the hell would you download either of these anyway?). Plus, file sharing allows you to try out a product before you buy it. For instance, if I download a movie or songs from a CD that I really enjoy, I will go out and official buy it when I get the money. So I say go for it.

I am for file sharing, but then I find the concept of money bewildering..."Oh my good sir, I will give you a few crumpled, tatty pieces of paper for a mega-fast computer mainframe." -------------------- As I gaze up at the night sky in my own fair time, I look back down and see the devastation. This post-nuclear world. It's terrible. But at least we got Nuka-Cola, warm and flat, the drink of the post-apocalyptic civiliztion. Generation Next!

Well, for downloading software, I can understand that. In fact, I can't even list how much pirated software I have on my computer right now; it's a lot. The reason for this is because it is easier to download it than to buy hundreds of dollars worth of software that will become outdated in a few years, and then buying hundreds of dollars more.As for music and movies, I actually do go out and buy 'em if I do like them. However, if the CD features only a few good songs, or the movie blows, then it's hardly worth my money to begin with. With downloading, I get to find out if it sucks or not, without wasting my money. And yes, I am too lazy to go down to the local Blockbuster and rent movies. That still costs money

Filesharing programs are the way of the future. Once people realize this, their lives will be much easier. For example, they will learn to incorporate it into their sales systems. (did the invention of the ape recorder put musicians out of business? Why should filesharing?) As a different transportation medium, it is almost ultimate; you have almost nothing in materials to pay for. If for example, there was a music server that charged by the song, the only cost is bandwidth. Charge extra for those that want 1MB/sec+ download speeds, but otherwise just create a system similar to fileplanet(in which case paying makes sense as it is not for free software, but actual music). This also applies to programs, but the program prices will likely vary. (and as more and more programs are getting created for linux now instead of just windows/mac, OS costs become negligible). I still beleive twice as many people would upgrade immediately to the latest OS version if the price was halved. Well, enough on this subject.

One word for you: iTunes. File sharing will become the dominant means of distributing music, and record industry doesn't like it because they will be rendered obsolete. But no matter what they try, they can't stop the new age when music is cheap and accessible. Time has come for the unjust system established by greedy capitalist swines known as "music industry" to fall. You know, it's amazing how cases like this (i.e. file sharing related) reveal true face of certain people. It's both funny and disgusting to see those tough bad-ass motherf***ers like Metallica and Dr.Dre whine and scream about a few hundred thousand dollars lost due to file sharing. All their powerful verses directed against mainstream, greed, capitalism, political correctness and whatnot suddenly sound weak and lame. Almost as weak and lame as their pathetic explanations why iTunes should be outlawed - according to Madonna and a bunch of other greedy bastar...uh, artist, songs cannot be sold separately from albums, because albums represent an "artistic whole". Every idiot knows that albums consist of one or two good tracks and the rest is total bullshit purpose of which is only to fill the CD and justify the outrageous 20$ price tag. Music belongs to the world. It doesn't belong to greedy hypocritical bastards who are in music business for money, and it certainly doesn't belong to immoral corporations who would kill everybody in the world if it meant additional profit for them. -------------------- Yesterday we obeyed kings and bent our necks before emperors. But today we kneel only to truth, follow only beauty, and obey only love.
