I was just wondering if any of this stuff is true. I learned about it in one of my Science classes this year.

I heard that a tornado in Australia is called a Willie Willie. I don't know if that is true, but I thought it to be quite funny.

Another thing that I've heard is that when you flush a toilet over in Australia, that the water will flow down the toilet in the opposite direction as toilets in the US.

I was just wondering if my Science teacher was just messing around or if he was actually telling my class the truth.

Well Stapes the only thing Aussie's call Willie Willie is their penis's.

As for the toilet water going opposite direction when flushed, well I think that is true.

First off, Stapes, wrong forum.

Plus, with the whole water going in opposite direction, that's a pretty wierd question. How's Ace supposed to know without knowing the direction that water flows over here? And don't ask me, because I honestly don't feel like going to flush the toilet right now to check it out. I'm pretty sure it's clockwise here, though. Either way, I've heard about it being opposite if you are north or south of the equator because the water is being pulled towards the equator, or something like that. I could be wrong.

Also, for the 'Willie Willie' thing, I heard that too. I never thought it to be true, though. It might be a Wisconsin misconception of Australia (yeah, Wisconsin is one of the strange states in the U.S.)

Scotty, how is this the wrong forum? This is the stupid stuff forum and I didn't want to post it in the community forum, because I thought you would have bitched at me then. It was just a STUPID question. So therefore, I thought it appropriate to be posted in the Stupid Stuff forum.

I didn't really know about the water direction thing. I was just wondering if any of that stuff was true.

Stapes, you posted this in the Forum Updates forum, not Stupid Stuff. I moved it after I posted my reply.

As for the Simpsons thing, yeah, now that you mention it I do remember that episode....... remotely. Haven't seen it in a long time.

BTW, if you flush a toilet at the equator, in theory it should just go straight down.

Well your not quite right about the Willie Willies. Its not a Tornado, its a little dust storm that appears in the outback and dry areas. They aren't very big or powerful but they are like really mini tornados (they get about two metres tall and can pull tin off rooves but thats about all.
The reason they really suck is because they pick up all the dirt and crap from the ground and coat everything with it. Our tent used to be green but now its a funny muddy colour because it got caught in a Willie Willie, the damn stuff never comes out!!

And I don't know about the toilet thing because my toilet doesn't spin at all, let alone the opposite way. It just pours water in and sucks it out at the same time, im so deprived

lol that Simpsons episode was really inaccurate but it was hell funny. When Australians go abroad their favourite hobby is making stuff up about Australia that isn't true, and I find when im in England I act more Australian...its like we have to live up to expectations

heheheheheh, Slurry, so how should I act if I visit Australia? I really do plan on getting over to there within the next ten years (probably after college) and maybe even moving out there. However, it's too far off to really think much about.

For the Willie Willie thing that you described Slurry, I think that's what is called, um, dust devils(?) here. I'm not sure, all I know is that here they occur moreso in the Great Plain states like Oklahoma, I think. Geez, it's been too long since I've learned about this.

Yeah I think those are similar, we just call em Willie Willies.
And yeah Australia is a good place to live, but you gotta be tough like Ace and I to wrestle the crocodiles! lol
The only thing that sucks about Perth where I live is we never get any big conventions or anything. But we get a fair amount of good concerts so it balances out.

Scotty, the Great Plains are the Dakota's and Nebraska. Oklahoma would be considered the southwest. And I think that you are correct about the dust devils thing. It is either that or a dust storm(?).

Scotty, if you want a travel companion, I would be willing to fly down to Aussie also.

I thought a dust storm was basically when dust started blowing all over the place. Dust devils are pretty much miniture tornadoes with a vortex, aren't they? Eh, I could be wrong.

And travel companion, maybe. I don't know, I might be moving to Australia after college. I'm not entirely sure yet though.

Oh yeah, you are right about the Dust Devils. I forgot that the dust storm just blowed dust everywhere instead of picking it up and throwing it everywhere.

Remember, the motto for Australia is, 'Don't live in Adelaide, its a hole!!'
